Decades ago, the Tamayo family owned a “Mexicatessen” selling Mexican spices, chilies and tortillas out of a small storefront. In 1977, Jose and Mary Tamayo founded La Tortilla Factory and the family business grew from serving Northern California restaurants and grocery stores to becoming a national brand with a mission to deliver a simply better tortilla.

In a world of diet culture and food sensitivities, a brand must stay fresh and flexible to be relevant. Thankfully, tortillas never go out of style, but they do evolve. La Tortilla Factory engaged us to simplify and modernize their Brand Identity. When it comes to heritage brands, it’s always evolution over revolution, so we maintained the structure of their vintage type and reimagined their iconic Abuela, while maintaining the spirit of the mark. The new brand identity created a fresh but recognizable look on the shelves.


We developed a new tagline that captured their commitment to using simple and better-for-you ingredients than their competitors. The Simply Better Tortillas tagline and new brand identity were then applied to a redesign of their packaging and website. Bold colors and authentic, yet elevated, design paired with playful, messaging makes the brand fun and memorable.


La Tortilla has been evolving and expanding each year to offer more better-for-you products. As they continue to innovate their family of products beyond tortillas, we continue to develop their brand universe to ensure their packaging is cohesive and easily recognizable, even when aisles apart.
